Hidden Gems

Ten days in Norway was all it took to make it into one of my top 3 destinations this year! That’s how the story goes… I suddenly realized that adventures are the best way to learn. It might be for this reason, that my wanderlust is officially incurable; but exploring the world will always remain my greatest passion and doing what you love always brings unforgettable stories!

From the moment I looked out of the airplane window, I knew that Norway was going to be amazing… My instincts were right, because as soon as we landed, a Cadillac was driving us through sunny Bergen. Summer was in the air and the wind was blowing through our hair! With only one evening, we were fortunate enough to get cruised around by Bjarte, an old family friend.

As the afternoon set in we were suddenly boating along the shorelines of Bergen, forgetting all about our early rise! And so after a daydreaming day, our Norwegian journey began… This country has got to be one of the most beautiful corners this world has to offer. After all the places I have seen, Norway is one of the hidden gems…

We started our journey exploring the Geirangerfjord, staying at one of the charming mansions: Hotel Union. It looks like we arrived at just the right time, since the weather was warm and the sun was shining at it’s brightest. With this mood, it made perfect sense that we ended up in one of the coldest waters I have ever been in; but then again, it’s not everyday that one gets to swim in one of the most picture perfect Fjords in the world!

Something to tick off my never ending bucket list! After a magical start, we continued our travels through the Geirangerfjord, driving along the panoramic Trollstigen serpentine mountain road to the Dovrefjell National Park. A complete contrast to our first location. Here nature is ruled by bright lichen and Musk Oxen. A highlight was getting to experience this region by staying in the authentic hotel: Kongsvold Fjelstue. Everything about this place made us a part of the traditional Norwegian way of life, and the gourmet food that came to our plates every evening, kept our mouths wanting more of this flavour delight!

On our last morning, before another long travel day, we stopped and walked up to Snohetta Viewpoint, and were blown away by one of the most incredible pieces of architecture ever seen! Our final three days were spent in the Rondane National Park. A beautiful dream which kept repeating itself each day. The stillness and the beauty of the surrounding lakes and mountains were a reminder of the important things in life.

On our last evening before flying away into another adventure, we played tourist for the day and walked all over Oslo, appreciating every single corner, especially the Oslo Opera House. It takes a whole lot of adaptation, seeing the things I have seen in such a fast paced way, but this trip has taught me that it is ok to switch off once in a while, and more importantly to never forget to appreciate what is right in front of you!

A few days here and there, and I am left with this newfound brightness. A feeling I know all too well… but from now on, I will try and carry it with me, wherever life may lead me to next…
