Overview
Embark on an unforgettable journey through one of Australia’s most captivating alpine regions, nestled in the heart of Victoria’s High Country. Our base for this adventure is the charming alpine village of Dinner Plain, offering the perfect gateway to explore the scenic wonders of the Alpine National Park.
Stretching from central Gippsland to the New South Wales border, where it meets the renowned Kosciuszko National Park, the Alpine National Park boasts some of the country’s most breathtaking alpine landscapes. From rugged mountain peaks to expansive grassy high plains, this region is home to some of Australia’s most iconic summits, including Mt Bogong, Mt Feathertop, and Mt Howitt.
Discover a range of spectacular walks that take you to the summits of these majestic mountains, or choose more leisurely trails that wind through forests of snow gums. In the warmer months of spring and summer, the landscape comes alive with a vibrant display of wildflowers, rivaling the beauty of the European Alps.
Dinner Plain, located at the edge of the Alpine National Park, is a unique village with direct access to an extensive network of trails. These pathways lead you into the heart of the park, where you can explore at your own pace. Along the way, you’ll encounter historic cattlemen’s huts, relics of the region’s pioneering past. Dating back to the 1860s, these huts stand as a testament to the early settlers who once roamed the High Country with their cattle.
The alpine environment is one of Australia’s most pristine, boasting a rich diversity of flora and fauna. The park is home to 110 native plant species, 12 of which are found nowhere else, including the Bogong daisy bush and silky daisy. Among the unique wildlife that inhabit the area are the rare Mountain Pygmy-Possum, the world’s only alpine marsupial, as well as the Smoky Mouse, Powerful Owl, and Spotted Tree Frog.
