Indulge in a diverse array of regional Japanese cuisine as we traverse through this fascinating country. Our accommodation ranges from comfortable Japanese inns to modern western-style lodgings, all featuring private ensuite facilities. This personalised journey is designed for a maximum of 12 guests, primarily from Australia, and will be guided by both Walkabout and local Japanese experts.
Our adventure begins in the dynamic city of Tokyo. We suggest arriving a few days early to fully explore this exhilarating metropolis. Our first destination is Yudanaka, renowned for its famous Snow Monkey Park where you can observe these captivating creatures in their natural habitat.
Next, we travel to Matsumoto, a historic city nestled at the foot of the Japanese Alps. Highlights include a visit to the impressive Matsumoto Castle and the renowned Modern Art Museum showcasing the works of Kusama Yayoi.
We then proceed to the pristine Kamakochi Valley, a breathtaking haven within the Japanese Alps. Here, you will have the chance to experience Japan’s traditional “onsen” hot spring baths, providing a perfect relaxation after a day of hiking.
An exceptional highlight of the tour includes a home visit and cooking class in Biwa-ko, offering an authentic taste of Japanese hospitality.
We also have the unique opportunity to stay overnight in a traditional Buddhist temple, where you can participate in the morning prayer ceremony and gain a profound insight into the spiritual traditions of Japan.
Beyond the lively cities of Tokyo, Osaka, and Hiroshima, enjoy leisure time to explore the cultural richness of Kyoto and Nara. Miyajima, often celebrated as Japan’s most beautiful island, will enchant you with its iconic Itsukushima Shrine, which appears to float on the sea at high tide, and its delectable oysters.
On our final day, we visit Hiroshima, where the Peace Memorial stands as a poignant reminder of the end of World War II.
