Overview
Embark on an unforgettable journey beginning in the charming city of Bergen, one of Europe’s best-kept secrets. Nestled beside the sea and framed by towering mountains, Bergen boasts a vibrant port and a renowned fish market, making it an ideal starting point for your adventure. Take the time to explore this picturesque locale before or after your walk.
As we set off westward, we delve into the breathtaking fjord country, highlighted by the romantic Geiranger Fjord. Our route meanders past stunning waterfalls and ascends to an alpine plateau, offering panoramic views of Norway’s most iconic fjord.
We traverse the spectacular mountain road, Trollvegen, and follow the historic King’s Road to the serene Dovrefjell National Park. Established to protect the dramatic highlands surrounding Mount Snohetta, this park is home to Arctic foxes, wild reindeer, wolverines, and musk oxen. The region’s rich history includes fossil records indicating that musk oxen thrived in Dovrefjell during the last Ice Age. The legendary Peer Gynt, from Henrik Ibsen’s famous play, immortalised the Rondane area in the annals of literature.
Following in Peer Gynt’s footsteps, we explore the stunning landscapes of Rondane National Park, encircled by ancient mountains. This region, over 600 million years old, emerged from a once lifeless sea. Throughout the millennia, it has provided sustenance for hunters, whose legacies are etched into the land through reindeer traps and burial mounds. The diverse fauna of Rondane ranges from lemmings to majestic reindeer.
Our adventure continues in Jotunheimen National Park, known as the “Home of the Giants.” This park epitomises the essence of Norway’s rugged countryside, with towering peaks and quaint mountain communities nestled in lush valleys. Experience breathtaking walks through ravine-like valleys, past thundering waterfalls, serene lakes, and ancient glaciers. The view from Besseggen, overlooking the dual lakes of Bessvatn and Gjende, is truly spectacular.
On our final day, we journey along the renowned Sognefjellet, traversing Northern Europe’s highest mountain pass, before descending into the stunning Sognefjord. We then return to the historic city of Bergen.
From Bergen, consider embarking on one of the world’s most scenic rail journeys, which winds through snowy peaks and across the stark Hardangervidda plateau to Oslo. Don’t miss the opportunity to take a side trip on the Flåm Line, renowned for its dramatic descent through the Flåm valley to Aurlandsfjord, with a stop at the magnificent Kjosfossen waterfall.
